To Judge or Not to Judge?

One of the most familiar and often quoted verses in the Bible is Luke 6:37, “do not judge and you will not be judged.” Almost everyone can quote it from memory, whether they go to church or not. The trouble is, this favorite passage is often misunderstood and misused to deflect conversations about our sinful choices. As we explore the passage, we will first look at what Jesus doesn’t say, then we will be ready to hear his challenge about our tendency to harbor a condemning and judgmental attitude towards others.

The Prophet Who Ran Away

You cannot run from God. This was a lesson the prophet Jonah had to learn the hard way. God called him to go to Nineveh, but he did not want to obey, so he jumped on a boat heading in the opposite direction. We may flee from the Lord because we don’t want to deal with our failures, or because we do not want to surrender our lives to God’s will. No matter how determined we might be, we can’t get away. Sooner or later we must face Him, so instead of running from God we should run towards His arms of grace.

Pride has a way of sneaking up on us, showing up when we least expect it. We don’t see it coming; it often flies in under the radar. If we’re not careful our ego can begin to swell… we start patting ourselves on the back and congratulating ourselves for being so talented and capable and wise. Watch out! It doesn’t take long for the heart to fill with conceit, and down we go!
