John 4

Still today in 2020, there is division among people groups and cultures all around the world. John 4 directly confronts all of these issues head on. With Jesus passing through Samaria, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at the well welling for water. While there, Jesus asks for a drink of water. The Samaritan woman would not allow such a thing to happen as Jesus was a Jew and she was a Samaritan. I absolutely Jesus’ response as he says “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10). Jesus himself is the gift of God that he references and the water that Jesus was to give wasn’t physical water but instead living water.
After questioning Jesus’ authority some more, he responds with one of the greatest truths that we could ever hear as Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14). We’ve all been thirsty to a point where all we want is a big glass of water! It may have been on a hot day, it may have been after a workout, as with our physical bodies, water is something we need often and plenty of. With being the living water, Jesus promises that this “thirst” that we crave will be no more. He is all satisfying and his love truly never runs dry.  Moving forward from there, Jesus confronts her on her adulterous behavior then confesses that he is the Messiah after she discusses her knowledge of a Messiah who will come. To put yourself in the Samaritan woman’s shoes is an incredible thing to imagine. The man that you’ve studied about and desired to meet your whole life has showed up. Not only did she get to meet him but he confronted her on her sin and told her the truth of the inward change that will occur when we come to him. This main theme in John 4 shows us that Jesus had come to give us “living water” and life that does not fade or parish but instead gives everlasting life.
