John 19.

The Son of God knew who he was as perfect and holy and knew who we were as sinners who needed redemption and reconciliation. This day that we read about in John 19 is celebrated as “good Friday” to us Christians today.

Pilate knew that Jesus was an innocent man but the pressure from the chief priests made him cave. I think I mentioned this before, but growing up Lutheran, reciting the Apostles Creed was something that we did every time I remember attending church as a child. For those that don’t know, the Apostles Creed has a line in it saying “suffered under Pilate”. Now that I’ve read John 19, I realize putting Pilates name in there like that doesn’t truly do justice as it was your sin and my sin that nailed Jesus to the cross. Pilate even wanted the words “Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews” on his cross.

Exodus 12:46, Numbers 9:12 and Psalm 34:20 are all future prophesy in that the Messiah won’t break a bone in his body. That prophecy came true in John 19 as the Messiah didn’t break a single bone even though the soldiers tried to. In my opinion, this is the most important chapter in all of the Bible as we see the Messiah obedient to the calling and slain for us.
