John 17

The high priestly prayer of John 17 remains “the true Lord’s prayer” in my opinion. This is the ultimate prayer that Jesus prays as he prays for his followers both present and future to stand firm in the sinful world. I used this chapter as one of my main texts back in September when I preached about prayer. It was so neat to use the movie clip from “The Gospel of John” and see how intense this prayer really is.

It’s important to note when reading this passage that Jesus was praying for his Father to get the upmost glory and honor. He knew that through his death (on the cross), the Father would ultimately be the one who was being glorified and honored.  In world full of chaos, distress and godlessness, it is peaceful to know that Jesus’ prayer included the words  “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one” (John 17:14-15).  The world has been corrupt and polluted with sin ever since the Garden and will remain sinful up until the 2nd coming. The world isn’t Jesus’ priority in this passage but instead his people are. Be reminded and encouraged in the days/weeks/months to come knowing that in that dark hour of intense agony and distress, you personally were on his mind. Please go back and read this remarkable prayer in John 17.
